A number of the world’s leading technology brands are taking part in the Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Spring Edition) and concurrent International ICT Expo which opened today at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the twin fairs continue for four days with more than 3,300 exhibitors from 24 countries and regions taking part. Industry heavyweights such as Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Polaroid, Intel and Ford have brought their unique products and expertise to this year’s event. Getting Connected The 12th Hong Kong Electronics Fair, the largest Spring electronics event in Asia, has attracted almost 2,800 exhibitors from 21 countries and regions. It features three new zones that spotlight the latest advancements in a connected world. The new Wearable Electronics zone includes more than 40 exhibitors of high-tech products including watches with exercise tracking, entertainment and health-related functions. Another debut zone is Connected Home which provides a glimpse into the future with the application of Internet of Things (IoT) in the home environment. Another new zone is Unmanned Tech which features remote-controlled gadgets such as airborne cameras and drones. Meanwhile, the In-Vehicle Electronics &amp; Navigation Systems zone returns to the fair with state-of-the-art audio visual systems, sensors and GPS instruments that enhance the driving experience. Famous Names Once again this year, the Hall of Fame has attracted many of the biggest names in the tech world. More than 430 exhibitors and some 570 leading brands are on display, featuring such heavyweights as Bigben, Coway, Ford, Hyundai, Intel, Motorola and Polaroid. For the first time, Microsoft has a presence at the fair’s Exhibitor’s Showroom introducing its latest Windows devices, including smart phone, tablets and embedded systems. The latest unique products from Asia can be found at the Invention Zone where more than 20 innovations from Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland, Korea and Taiwan are on display. Tech Talk A variety of seminars are taking place during the Electronics Fair. Today’s seminar is entitled “Latest Innovation in Consumer Electronic Products” with discussions on the Apple Watch, wireless charging and smart homes. There will also be seminars on such themes as “Wearable Electronics are in Vogue” (14 April) and “3D Printing – Shaping a Better Life” (15 April). Product demonstrations, launches and buyer’s forums are taking place throughout the fair period. The ICT Advantage The concurrent International ICT Expo is devoted to exploring the latest ICT solutions and products that help SMEs sharpen their competitiveness. This year’s event gathers almost 600 exhibitors from 13 countries and regions. There are six pavilions this year, coming from Australia, Canada, the Chinese mainland, India, Korea and New Zealand. A new “iStartup@HK” area has been launched this year by the Office of Government Chief Information Officer to promote the innovative projects from over 20 local start-ups. Incubators including Hong Kong Science &amp; Technology Parks Corporation and Cyberport, as well as pavilions from Canada, India and Korea have brought start-up entrepreneurs and innovators to the expo to meet potential business partners. Valuable Advice SMEs can get the best advice on how to maximise the benefits of new technology from such global technology leaders as Google, Microsoft, SoftLayer (an IBM company) and Yahoo at this year’s SME IT Clinic. The Clinic provides free professional consultation services for companies which cover various IT aspects including developing online capabilities, increasing sales, reducing costs and enhancing efficiency. The ICT Expo also features a series of seminars covering topical issues including today’s seminar on “e-Commerce on the Cloud” presented by SoftLayer. Tomorrow, Microsoft Corporation will hold its “Small Investment, Big Business with Microsoft Cloud Solutions” seminar, while Google and Shopline will join hands to co-host a workshop “Build and Promote your Online Business in 120 Minutes” on 15 April. The Hong Kong Computer Society and Cyberport will jointly hold the “China-Hong Kong-Taiwan Hackathon 2015 Finalists’ Sharing Session” tomorrow on the topic of “Secret Recipes for Creating Winning Apps”. Fab Apps The latest fabulous applications can be found at the Apps Zone which features around 20 exhibitors including institutions, start-up companies and young apps developers. Mobile applications featured at the expo can help users to monitor their posture, facilitate event planning, monitor a child’s location and even forecast the demand at food outlets to help reduce waste.
